Search The Scriptures — Study 37 — Acts 19: 1-20

Study 37 From The Book of Acts Is: Acts 19: 1-20

Ephesus was the metropolis of the large and wealthy Province of Asia, a centre of commerce and religion, famous for its image and its temple dedicated to the goddess Diana.

  1. Apollos had taught only the baptism of John (18:24, 25) at Ephesus. When Paul arrived, what did he find these disciples lacked in knowledge and assured experience? Is this experience yours? Have you realized how essential it is for you to understand fully in order to teach others accurately?
  2. Verse 20 summarizes both Paul’s ministry at Ephesus and Luke’s whole section from 16:6 to 19:20, which covers the evangelization of Macedonia, Achia and Asia. What methods and special incident led to such a result in Ephesus (verses 8-19) and by what power were great results achieved in the three provinces? Cf. 16:14; 18:9 and 19:11.  Does this review highlight any weaknesses in your Christian life?

Search The Scriptures — Study 14 — Acts 8:26-40

Study 14  From The book of Acts Is: Acts 8:26-40.
  1. Note how much of active interest and response the Ethiopian was already showing before Philip met him. What more did he need before he was able to go ‘on his way rejoicing’? What similar aids may we use in order to find God and to discover more of His truth for ourselves?
  2. Learn from Philip (a) the qualities needed in and (b) the methods used by, one man an when leading another person to trust Christ. Are you willing to be sent on such an errand (verses 26, 29)?

Search The Scriptures — Study 08 — Acts 4:32-5:16

Study 08 From The book of Acts Is: 4:32-5:16

In this insight into the fellowship of the early church the sincere self-sacrifice of Barnabas is compared with the hypocrisy and greed of Ananias and Sapphira.
    1.     In 4:32-37 what essentials of fellowship are demonstrated? See one result of them in verse 33.

2.     What made the sin of Ananias and Sapphira so grave and what led to it?  Why was such a divine judgement necessary? What result did it produce?

3.     What example can you follow from the action of Barnabas and what danger can you avoid from the attitude of Ananias and Sapphira?
Notes
1.     5:4. This verse shows that the giving spoken of in 4:34-37 was entirely voluntary.
2.     5:9 ‘Tempt: the word means to put God to the test, to challenge or provoke Him.  Cf. Ex. 17:2,7; Acts 15:10
