Search The Scriptures — Study 6— Genesis 8:20-9:29

Study 6 of "Search The Scriptures” Is:

Genesis 8:20-9:29

      1.     What did Noah’s altar and burnt offerings signify? To what would they correspond in our lives today? Cf. Rom. 12:I; Heb. 13:15,16.

     2.     Reflect on Noah’s position after the deluge.  In what ways did God encourage him?

     3.     What makes human life supremely precious? What kind of penalty is here ordained for the murderer?

4.     What may we learn here concerning the place and manner of covenant making? Can you think of other visible tokens and pledges which seal covenants?

Note. 9:13. This does not imply that the rainbow was now seen for the first time, but that God now made it a token of His covenant of promise to Noah.

Search The Scriptures — Study 5— Genesis 7:1-8:19

Study 5 of "Search The Scriptures” Is:

Genesis 7:1-8:19

     1.     What was God’s part in Noah’s salvation, and what was Noah’s? Cf. Eph. 2:8; Phil. 2: 12, 13; 1 Pet. 1:5.

     2.     In the arch Noah was not saved from being affected by the Flood at all, but he was brought safely through it. Cf. ‘saved through water’, 1 Pet. 3:20. In what similar way does the gospel of Christ offer us salvation from God’s judgement upon sin?

Search The Scriptures — Study 4— Genesis 6

Study 4 of "Search The Scriptures” Is:
Genesis 6
1.     What do we learn here concerning (a) the fallen condition of human nature, (b) God’s attitude to sin, (c) the provision of a way of salvation? Cf. Mt. 24:37-39; 1 Peter 3:20; 2 Pet. 2:5.

    2.     ‘Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord’. What were his characteristics? Cf. Heb. 11:7.

Notes
    1.     In Gn. 6:3 the words ‘a hundred and twenty years’ probably reter not to the average length of human life, but to the respite for repentance which the race was to have from that time to the Flood.

    2.     The value of the New Testament references is especially great in this study.

Search The Scriptures — Study 1— Genesis 1 and 2

NEXT STUDY IS THE BOOK OF GENESIS
Analysis of Genesis
1-11 Primaeval history.
12 – 50 The ancestors of the chosen people. There is some overlapping, but each patriarch is the leading figure within the section to which his name is attached below:
12:1-25:18 Abraham
25:19-26:35 Isaac
27-36 Jacob
37-50 Joseph

Study 1 Genesis 1 and 2
1.     What truths stand out regarding (a) the character of the whole creation, (b) the character of man and his relation to God?
2.     ‘And God said’ is found ten times Cf. Ps. 33:6, 9; Heb. 11:3. What does this suggest concerning the mode of creation? What further light is provided by Jn. 1:1-3; Col. 1:15-17?
3.     Why did God make men ‘male and female’? What pattern for marriage is here divinely ordained? Cf. Mt. 19:3-6
Note: Interest should be concentrated on theological truths not to be learnt from text-books of natural science.

Search The Scriptures — Study 25 — Luke 9:37-56

Study 25 of "Search The Scriptures” Is:

Luke 9:37-56

    1.     Verses 37-43. Note the disciples’ failure (verse 40). Do you find any significance in the fact that this followed a week of new revelations (verses 22-27)? What ought we to learn from this?

    2.     Verses 43-56. Further failures of the disciples. Why did they find it so hard to understand Jesus’s teaching or to practice it? Do you find the same difficulties? How are they overcome? Cf. Phil. 2:3-8.

Note. The analysis shows a new section of the Gospel begins at verse 51. But, verses 51-56 are included in this study because they also record and example of failure on the part of the disciples.
For studies 26-47 on the second part of Luke’s Gospel see p. 18

I have copied the Bible verses concerning this study for your convenience.

Luke 9:37-56

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”
41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples,44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”
49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Samaritan Opposition

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them.56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
